Course Description & Objectives
This course assists students in developing their reading and speaking skills.  Students focus on improving their skills and knowledge in extensive academic reading, understanding academic lectures, taking reading and lecture notes, and understanding and answering test questions (matching true/false questions, multiple choice, and short answer).

Methods and Activities
Academic tasks developed in this course include reading course materials, listening to lectures, taking reading and lecture notes, writing journal entries, participating in small group and class discussions, and taking exams.

To assist students in understanding content material, this course also address such tasks as surverying the syllabus and textbook, skimming, scanning, predicting, recognizing main ideas, inferring meaning from context, recognizing text organization, developing vocabulary, and reading test questions.

Reading Journals
Students are required to keep a Reading Journal, in which they make one entry per week in response to the reading assigned.  These journals are collected twice during the semester.  The majority of the grade for these journals will be based on content and thoughtfullness.  Your writing will also be graded on grammar and structure when problems in these areas interfere with understanding.
