Exterior

When purchasing a home, you need to look at the shape of the land the property is built upon. Avoid irregular-shaped plot of lands. The best shape to consider are square, oblong, or rounded. Try to avoid a diamond shaped land, L-shaped, U-shaped, or triangle shaped land.  In general, you need to make sure that the front portion of the plot of land is lower than the back. The back should face a hill, mountains, tall trees, or another building taller than yours or equal in size. The front should face either water or a not-too-busy road, and the site should not be damped and should have good drainage with good soil.
One important to consider when purchasing a home or looking for a rental is the exterior or the surrounding area of the house. If the exterior is not good, I wouldn't even look at the property itself. It doesn't matter if the floor plan is excellent or the house or apartment faces your most auspicious direction (Ba Zhai), you may still experience difficulties in your daily life, possibly lose money or even someone you love depending on what type of Shar Qi is affecting your home or apartment. A good example is the house below, which built on an unstable plot of land on a cliff.

A house is considered possessing good Feng Shui if water in front is present. However, you need to make sure that the water is fresh and flowing, not dead or stagnant. Water should also not flow directly towards the main entrance of your home or property. Water that flows away and curves towards the house is also considered inauspicious. A lake a small pond, or a pool is preferred. Water flowing into an enclosed drain is also acceptable.

The roads around our homes are something we shouldn't ignore if we want to live in an auspicious home. Avoid properties at a dead end, next to the freeway or highway, a Y-road, or road that curves toward the house or property.

Trees are something we always look for when purchasing a home or finding a place to rent. Today, especially, people are getting into this "green" mentality and prefer properties that provides a place where they can relax and not have to look at buildings or cars passing by when looking outside their window. In doing this, you need to make sure there's no trees directly in front of your main entrance. Trees in back of the house or property or on both sides of the house is preferred. The house above, for example may look nice for some, but based on Feng Shui theory, this house is considered to possess bad Feng Shui because of the huge tree directly in front of it. Another thing is the irregularly-shaped roof.

If you are looking to rent or buy a condominium, you need to pay attention to the shape of the buildings. Avoid irregularly-shaped buildings, e.g., T-shaped buildings, and U-shaped buildings.  Look for a regular-shaped building with no missing corners like the following:

The roof of the house or building is yet another thing to consider when looking to purchase or rent a house since it affects your ability to retain wealth. Stay away from irregularly-shaped roof such as the one pictured above.

A flat or a sloping (on one side) roof are also considered bad Feng Shui. Look for a house or building with a regular-shaped roof like the one pictured below.

So, you think you found the perfect home with the greatest plot of land, the roof shape just right, and the shape of the building just perfect, but it is located near a cemetery. Do you buy or rent the house? In Feng Shui theory, you shouldn't.  Homes or buildings located near a hospital, cemetery, temples, churches, or any other Yin type establishments or buildings are said to bring about illness and other mishaps.

Finally, when looking to buy or rent a home, look at the driveway leading to the main door. Make sure that the main door is not obstructed or hidden by other buildings. You need to make sure that the property posses what is referred to as the "bright hall." See image below:

You also need to avoid driveways or walkways directly hitting your main door.

Look for a driveway that curves like the following:
